Abstract
The developmental fate of embryonic cells becomes permanently fixed by binding of Polycomb and trithorax group proteins to their DNA. This maintains certain genes in an active state, and others in an inactive state. Polycomb and trithorax group proteins therefore provide a cellular 'memory' mechanism that is stably inherited from one cell generation to the next. Loss of this may be important in cancer, especially certain types of leukemias. We wish to test the role of the trithorax-like gene, Mll, upon memory of Hox expression profiles and developmental fate in embryonic tissues.
