Abstract

The proposal aims to develop by using Grid-technology the capacity of our existing agent-based system (COSMIC) to embrace modelling of complex biologically-relevant genomic inputs and environments. We will utilize natural bacterial genetic systems, including contingent gene expression and horizontal gene transfer mechanisms as well as metaphors for developing Grid-enabled novel agent-based computing architectures of general application to microbiology, genetics and other areas of biology. The resulting models will inform studies on bacterial adaptation and evolution, for example in response to pollutants or antimicrobial agents and to inform predictions of behaviour of populations of bacterial pathogens and their viruses.
