Abstract
The chicken cornea attains adult levels of transparency in a one week window before hatching at the time of considerable structural and compositional change. But what are the chief structural alterations and what compositional changes drive these? We will carefully chart structural matrix change, especially those of the key collagen-proteoglycan relationships, and correlate them with corneal transparency. Spatial and temporal changes in the network or cytoskeletal proteins/junctional complexes will be investigated and a link with the extracellular environment explored. The work will provide much-needed information about corneal structure-function relationships, developmental dynamics and cell-cell/cell-matrix interactions.
