Abstract
The MS35/AtMYB26 gene regulates anther dehiscence via a non-jasmonic acid dependent pathway. Atmyb26 mutants produce functional pollen that fails to be released. This is at least partly due to a lack of secondary thickening in the anther endothecium. Atmyb26 mutants also show altered expression of a dehiscence zone specific polygalacturonase (DZPG) that is involved in stomium lysis. Expression of both AtMYB26 and DZPG also occurs within the developing siliques and appear altered in the mutant. We propose that AtMYB26 may be involved in determining cell identity within the anther and the siliques. By identifying the downstream factors that AtMYB26 regulates and directly interacts with, and by utilising expression studies, this project will provide a molecular genetic analysis of the dehiscence process; such work will have future biotechnological implications.
