Abstract

Attentional processing of stimuli (S+) that signal the availability of appetitive reinforcement may mediate the production of conditional behaviours directed towards the reinforcer. It is well established that appetitive S+ command selective attention, elicit physiological excitation and produce instrumental reinforcer-seeking and consummatory behaviour. The aim of this project is to measure these response forms in parallel in an established human appetitive discrimination procedure and then disrupt attention for the S+ with a secondary task in the expectation that this manipulation will block the other response forms to the S+. Such data would demonstrate that selective attention for S+ mediates conditioned appetitive behaviour in humans.
