Abstract

The involvement of micro RNAs (miRNAs) in regulating gene expression will be investigated in Arabidopsis thaliana. A bioinformatics approach has been used to identify novel miRNA sequences from within the Arabidopsis genome. The potential messenger RNA (mRNA), targets of some of the miRNAs have also been identified. Expression profiles for both the miRNAs and their target mRNAs will be determined. Using both transgenic reporter gene approaches the ability of the miRNAs to effect gene silencing will be determined as will the effect of the loss and/or gain of function of their target mRNAs. The information obtained will be useful in aiding the development of novel tools required to manipulate key areas of plant development.
