Abstract
Brassica species are important crops in the UK and many other countries. A Multinational Brassica Genome Project has been launched to accelerate the improvement that is required if the full potential benefits of these crops are to be realised. This proposal aims to contribute towards the first stage of the genome sequencing project - the end sequencing of clones in the BAC libraries earmarked for sequencing of the B rapa genome. We also aim to assess the transferability of knowledge of genome structure from B. rapa (A genome) to the genomes of the most important Brassica crops in the UK: B. oleracea (C genome) and B. napus (containing both A and C genomes). This will be achieved by comparative sequencing of homoeologous genome segments.
