Abstract

Acyl CoA esters have been shown to be involved in regulating metabolism and cell signalling in bacteria, yeast and mammalian cells but little is known about their role in plants. We have found that altered acyl CoA profiles correlate with altered peroxisome morphology in several Arabidopsis mutants disrupted in peroxisomal fatty acid Beta-oxidation. Further more Tween ester treatments result in a specific induction in genes and enzymes invulved in fatty acid beta oxidation in Arabidopsis leaves. This application aims to manipulate in-vivo acyl CoA levels and establish the effects on peroxisome morphology and related gene expression. The study will then be extended to the transcriptome in order to establish the global nature of the response of plant gene expression to altered levels of acyl CoA metabolites.
