Abstract

The existence of glycoproteins in bacteria is now accepted as a general phenomenon but little is understood about their structure, biosynthesis and biological functions. This project addresses a putative general O-glycosylation pathway, analogues to the O-mannosylation pathway in fungi, for protein modification in the model soil organism Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2). We will use a multidisciplinary approach to obtain direct evidence for protein glycosylation in S. coelicolor, to elucidate their biosynthesis and structure, and to study the biological roles of glycoproteins during the growth of this organism.
