Abstract

How does a pair of animals (or humans) come to an agreement? The standard game-theoretic models assume that each individual makes it decision independently on the other. This assumption is unrealistic in most social interactions. We propose to combine innovative mathematical modelling with experimental tests to investigate how animals respond to each other and reach a negotiated settlement. Using the context of biparental care, we will develop a suite of advanced models that have widespread applicability, and then test specific predictions in a very suitable avian system, the Kentish plover. Taken together, our work will promote the use and testing of advanced game-theoretic models in animal behaviour. (Joint with BBS/B/05893)
