Abstract
The control of floral organ identity by homeotic genes is perhaps the most striking example of how patterning genes control plant structure. It is now known, however, how the activity of homeotic genes is translated into specific patterns of organ growth and differentiation. To address this question, we have identified a set of genes that are activated by AGAMOUS in the early stages of Arabidopsis floral organ development. We propose loss- and gain-of-function experiments to reveal the roles of these genes in organ primordia. We will also characterise the regulation of these genes, to understand how floral homeotic genes act combinatorially to select their target genes, and specifically to test the hypothesis that multiprotein complexes containing different combinations of homeotic regulators select different target promoters.
