Abstract

The existing successful development of a ToF-SIMS chemical microscope will be enhanced by the incorporation of a new buckminsterfullerene based ion beam system delivering for the first time both very high ion yields and 100nm spatial resolution. This instrument will be used with FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy to probe spatially resolved (2D and 3D) chemistry in four cell and microbiology projects. These are all multicomponent systems. The resulting mass spectra will be complex. An integral aspect of the project will therefore be to develop evolutionary computing methods not only to interpret the spectra, but also for the first time to deliver biochemically understandable images of the systems studied.
