Abstract

Apicomplexans are the most important parasites of man and livestock. The proposal integrates four research teams with complementary skills in a fundamental study to a) Overview the biomolecular organisation and molecular evolution of apicomplexans through comparative proteomics of purified invasive stages of Cryptosporidium, Eimeria, Plasmodium and Toxoplasma. b) Analyse the proteomes of secretory organelles and with carefully selected gene knockout, protein tagging/localisation, and protein co-precipitation studies further elucidate the role of these organelles in host cell recognition and invasion. The data will be of fundamental and broad specific value and provide a rational foundation for the development of new therapeutic targets. (Joint with BBS/B/03807 and BBS/B/03858)
