Abstract

We propose a fundamentally new mechanism for the internal regulation of the physical and biological properties of soil based on the coupling between structural genesis and microbial activity. Formulated from a substantial body of evidence and proof-of-concept work, we derive hypothesis addressing the functionality of soil structure and microbial interactions. These will be tested using an integrated theoretical and experimental programme of work. Pore-scale aggregation models will be linked to transport and microbial growth models to understand the emergence of organised and adaptive behaviour. This work will underpin more effective strategies for managing the soil-microbe complex. ((Joint with BBS/B/2002).
