Abstract

This application aims to consolidate informal collaborations between four groups that already share a common interest in the pathology of viral diseases of livestock and have exchanged reagents in the past. A strong theme that links the groups is an interest in global threat from exotic viruses. The work aims to gain a better understanding of pathophysiology of host-pathogen interactions and persistent infections and transmission, as well as improving vaccinology for the paramyxovirus family of viruses. The focus of this application is the `Barriers to cross-species infection, in particular the interaction of virus with their natural hosts and with species in which they have the potential to emerge. This work is of relevance to an understanding not only of cross-species infection between animals but also zoonotic infections such as the recently emerged SARS coronavirus.
