Abstract

The impact of the 2001 foot and mouth epidemic on the rural economy, makes it imperative to investigate the factors responsible for its scale and how outbreak control might be further optimised. Guided by a joint DEFRA-BBSRC advisory group, this project will address these priorities using statistical analysis and mathematical modelling to: (1) better understand within-farm transmission, and hence how farm infectiousness develops through time; (2) develop the theory of spatial epidemics and targeted control policies; (3) develop new methods for robustly estimating key parameters from outbreak data; (4) analyse data from the 2001 epidemic to identify additional risk factors for spread and evaluate the effectiveness of control policies; (5) analyse the potential effectiveness of vaccination, movement restrictions and other measures to control future outbreaks.
