Abstract

The aim of the project is to address the gap, in reagents and expertise, that exists between research on avian and mammalian type I IFN antiviral systems. We will define major components of the avian system, identifying both those features in common with the mammalian system but particularly highlighting any significant differences. We will clone components for expression by trawling existing EST database and also be subtractive or functional cloning of IFN-induced mRNAs. We will assay the biochemical or cell signalling activities of selected components. We will investigate the ability of avian viruses to block IFN induction and signalling or to resist IFN-induced antiviral activity, and attempt to identify viral modulators and targets.
