Summary

The EU imports around 27 million tonnes of soybeans and soybean products for use in animal feeds. Domestic production of alternative protein sources would compete for land with food production. The meal remaining after extraction of oil from rapeseed is rich in protein and holds promise for use in animal feed, but the presence of the glucosinolate progoitrin limits the more extensive use of rapeseed meal in animal feed. We have identified a rapeseed line that lacks progoitrin. This proof-of-concept is needed to support the licencing of our genetic variant for commercial breeding of rapeseed for edible use. We aim to understand the genetic analysis of the low progoitrin trait, characterize the causative mutation for the low progoitrin trait, undertake market evaluation and initiate IP protection.
