Abstract

By conducting the first experimental investigation of contextual vocal learning on a social bird species (the pied babbler), I plan to advance substantially our understanding of animal communication. Specifically, my three key objectives are to assess: (a) whether birds have the cognitive ability to learn and alter their calls depending on context; (b) when juveniles start correctly giving and responding to a variety of intraspecific and heterospecific calls; and (c) whether receivers take into account the caller's identity when responding to particular calls.
