Abstract
Four principal investigators (PIs) in our Department have set up a consortium to advance functional imaging of excitable cells, including sub-cellular, cellular, culture, and tissue levels. Due to the unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution of multi-photon imaging, these techniques have become indispensable tools in this research. All PIs are already involved, either directly or via collaboration, in studies using confocal and multiphoton microscopy. They have obtained crucial expertise, published or submitted independent work, and gathered pilot data for future projects. We have reached a level now where more significant progress is hindered by the lack of access to multiphoton microscopy in our Department. Given our experience and research plans, we are in a good position to bid for a multi-photon microscope. The long-term research plans of all PIs focus on excitable cell physiology, in particular cardiac myocytes and central neurons, which conform to strategic target areas for this department. While PIs will enjoy priority booking-rights, other members of this department will be given access to the facility for pilot studies and small projects, subject to approval by the board. The group of PIs has already successful experience in managing an old multiuser confocal microscope, which was used for simple fluorescence immunolabelling.
