Abstract

Due to the timing of the BBSRC funded pilot projects little use has been made in them for the OGSA-DAI software. This software is being developed by the UK eScience community as a major contribution to the world eScience Grid initiative. This software is designed to enable access in Grid environments to heterogenous databases managed by DBMS based on SQL, XML or other approaches, and would appear to be a natural choice for the bioinformatics community for their data management in the future. In this research we will investigate how the present approaches to database access could be replaced by an approach based on OGSA-DAI, using two of the current BBSRC pilot projects as exemplars. The technical benefits of doing this will be critically evaluated and a report prepared on the findings of the project. It is also planned to prepare workshop material and run a workshop for the bioinformatics community to inform them of this software's potential.
