Abstract

The Consortium for Functional Genomics of Microbial Eukaryotes (COGEME) based in Manchester and Aberdeen has established world-class facilities for the analysis of the transcriptomes and proteomes of a number of different yeasts and filamentous fungi. COGEME has also established a bioinformatics centre dedicated to the analysis of the data emerging from transcriptomic and proteomic studies using integrative database platforms (see www.cogeme.man.ac.uk) COGEME therefore provides an important resource for the ever-increasing number of UK-based fungal research groups. At the beginning of 2004, COGEME moves from providing BBSRC subsidised research facilities to service facilities and therefore users will now be expected to pay the full economic costs. This application is being made on behalf of the UK fungal community (ie. COGEME users not COGEME grant holders), to request that the BBSRC set aside a sum of money that can be used by UK fungal researchers to support pilot projects using COGEME facilities. The Fund will be rigorously managed fund by the COGEME Advisory Committee. In addition to supporting new research projects on the model fungal species such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Schizosaccharomyces pombe and Aspergillus nidulans, studies on both human and plant pathogens will also be greatly facilitated through ready access to the world-class functional genomics facilities provided by COGEME.
