Abstract
We request core support for collaborative research addressing biologically important post-translational modification problems. We will employ ultra-high sensitivity nanoElectrospray, MALDI and FAB mass spectrometry on a wide range of projects with the aim of providing a molecular understanding of biological events in which post-translational modifications, especially glycosylation, play key roles. Projects include the characterisation of the natural ligands of carbohydrate binding proteins which are implicated in regulating reproductive and immunological processes, the identification of glycans which mediate host/pathogen and host/parasite interactions and the determination of key modifications of cytoplasmic signalling proteins.
