Abstract

OCMS has become established as a leading research institution in protein science. In the next 5 years it will continue to provide an interdisciplinary link between chemistry, biochemistry, and medicine, using X-ray crystallography, NMR electron microscopy and other biophysical methods as the central tools. Our goal is to combine these tools in a concerted effort to understand the nature of some large protein assemblies. In particular we will investigate i) enzyme complexes in secondary metabolism ii) extracellular receptor complexes and iii) intracellular signalling complexes. The aim is to provide an atomic resolution structural framework for understanding catalytic mechanisms and dynamic interactions in these systems. In recognition of scientific advances and the changed funding climate since 1988, a new management structure will be introduced.
