Abstract

Fibronectin-binding bacterial surface proteins mediate adherence of the pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes to human cells, and efficient host cell invasion; processes required for initiation of infection and implicated in bacterial persistence after antibiotic treatment, respectively. These virulence factors are potential therapeutic targets, however a fundamental molecular understanding of the processes of adhesion and internalisation is lacking. Our preliminary data suggests a novel and highly efficient mechanism of binding of S. pyogenes to fibronectin. If correct, it will provide exciting insights into bacterial/host interactions and protein/protein interactions and suggest new approaches for the development of therapeutics.
