Abstract
This work will involve the synthesis of a range of carbohydrate derivatives, and an assessment of their binding affinities to P-selectin. Both monovalent and multivalent derivatives will be studied, with multivalent derivatives being prepared via glycoconjugates or controlled polymerisation of ligand-acrylamide monomers. The importance of N-acetylation within sialic acid containing carbohydrates will be studied and novel sialy1 Lewis a and sialyl Lewis x oligosaccharides containing cyclic sialic acid will be prepared. The ability of charged compounds to inhibit P-selectin binding will also be investigated.
