Abstract

Recent advances in our understanding of Adenovirus (Ad)- host cell interactions provide the basis for investigating the biological determinants of Ad infection, a prerequisite for developing Ad vectors for gene therapy. Our first objective is to investigate the details of the protein-protein interactions that underlie the distinct attachment and internalisation strategies employed by different Ad serotypes. The second objective is to assess how changes in Ad fibre-receptor interactions influence subsequent events in the virus life cycle. The third objective is to identify the Ad3 receptor and define the binding site on Ad3. These studies will contribute towards the development of Ad vectors for targeted gene delivery and may allow us to intervene in the diseases caused by these viruses.
