Abstract

This interdisciplinary study will use imaging and laser optical trapping techniques combined with protein/RNA biochemistry to characterise two types of processive reaction on RNA: 1). Scanning by eukaryotic 40S ribosomal subunits, i.e. the process that precedes translation initiation; 2.) RNA-dependent RNA synthesis by the NS5B polymerase from hepatitis C virus. This will provide data on the force generation characteristics and dynamics of these molecular motors.
