Abstract

Great progress has been made in recent years in understanding the structure- function relationship in collagen. We propose to build on these studies to define a fibrillar structure of collagen that contains both the crystalline and liquid-like phases. This will produce a definitive model of a multiphase structure at the highest resolution available for the in situ study of molecular assembly in a protein where the molecular packing has a direct significance in the biological function.
