Abstract
The ROA technique, which measures vibrational optical activity in the Raman spectrum, will be used to study viruses in aqueous solution to obtain key information at the molecular level. This includes the fold of the major coat proteins, differences of loop structure and solvent exposure within similar folds, the RNA or DNA conformation, and possibly details of protein-nucleic acid interactions and carbohydrate conformations. The results may also provide new information on solution structure and dynamics of individual protein and nucleic acids.
