Abstract

The project will address a number of key mechanistic, redox and molecular recognition issues related to biological peroxidase catalysis. Ascorbate peroxidase has been chosen for this study because it is representative of the peroxidase family, and because a crystal structure and bacterial expression system are available. The main objectives are to investigate (a) the relationship between structure and function, (b) the oxidation-reduction properties of the metal, (c) how substrate specificity is controlled, (d) the nature of the electron transfer process.
