Abstract

Many pathogens produce proteins, haemolysins, that have the ability to lyse erythrocytes and other host cells. Recently, a novel, chromosomally-encoded haemolysin, designed HlyE, has been identified in E. coli. Diffraction quality crystals of HlyE have been obtained and this proposal aims to determine its three dimensional structure. This work will give valuable insights into the presently unknown mode of action of HlyE. In addition crystallisation trials will be carried out on FNR transcriptional regulator of HlyE, and on proteins of the HlyE export system.
