Abstract

We propose to investigate an alternative to conventional caging methodology based on entrapment of solutes within a liposome which is destabilised on illumination. Destabilisation is induced by photoisomerisation of a lipid bearing azobenzene substituents. Preliminary results have shown rapid solute release following a single laser pulse. The proposed work includes investigation of the kinetics and mechanism of solute release, light-induced permeability as a function of molecular size and effects of membrane composition and lipid phase on solute release.
