Abstract

Aminoglycosides are a large class of clinically important antibiotics that include such significant compounds as gentamicin, neomycin and butirosin. It is proposed to investigate the mechanism of the key steps in the synthesis of butirosin. The biosynthetic genes for butirosin have recently been identified upstream of the resistance gene. This opens the way to manipulating the genes to produce novel aminoglycosides which may possess great clinical value.
