Abstract

We request funds for consumables, and a contribution to travel for the structure determination of bacterial photosynthetic proteins by high resolution electron microscopy. We will determine the 3D structure of the light harvesting complex LH1 at high resolution, continuing on from our current projection structure. We will investigate complexes of other proteins involved in photosynthesis by 2D and 3D crystallisation. This should prepare us for structure determinations most likely by electron microscopy but possibly also by X-ray crystallography. This work will lead to an improved understanding of membrane protein assembly in general and the specific structure/function relationships of some important energy transducing proteins.
