Abstract

The wealth of new data surrounding the origin of tetrapods needs to be subjected to fully comprehensive phylogenetic analysis, using new procedures and methods to resolve conflicts between an increasing range of contrasting evolutionary hypotheses. Much of the fish- tetrapod morphological transition concerns the origin of digited limbs, and, because limbs have been the major focus of vertebrate-oriented developmental research, this transition is an exceptional (vertebrate) subject for investigating relationships between evolutionary rate, developmental process, anatomical innovation, ecological and behavioural change.
