Abstract

We propose to design, microfabricate and test a new concept for generic microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) resonant mass sensors based upon cyclically symmetric structures. We will use the frequency split of the degenerate modes of resonance for analysis of specific biological binding events. The generic applicability of sensors will be tested by application to two areas where a real clinical need exists: quantitative measurement of thyroglobulin mRNA (cDNA) for thyroid cancer management and monitoring and direct label-free immunodiagnostic assay of S-100 protein as a marker of brain damage following head injury.
