Abstract

It is proposed to develop low cost printed bioreactors and microfluidic circuits on plastic substrates as chemostats for growing prokaryotic organisms. Such devices will incorporate a low volume (nL-mul) bioreactor, microchannel inputs and outputs, filters, stirrers, a biomass monitor, a range of sensors to monitor parameters of the growth media and the associated hardware and software to allow semi-automatic data logging, monitoring and control. It is anticipated that the complete system will comprise an array of bioreactors and allow the study of the effect of C/N sources, vitamins, inhibitors, and mineral supplements on microbial growth. E. coli will be used as the model organism.
