Abstract

The LINK scheme we propose involves research into novel optical imaging and spectroscopic instrumentation for surface characterisation and modification with greatly improved spatial resolution over current technologies. We shall apply the new instrument to studies of protein interactions at cell membranes and on skeletal mineral crystal surfaces, however, the new instrument we will describe in this proposal represents a generic technology for laser spectroscopic surface analysis and modification which can be applied to a wide range of problems in solid state physics, surface chemistry and sub-micron technology. The proposed instrument will combine spectroscopic sensitivity with high spatial resolution and be able, for the first time, to map the interaction of biomolecules with specific sites on a solid or compliant surface with nanometer resolution.
