Abstract
A previously unknown signalling mechanism, from the protein secretory pathway to the cell nucleus, will be described in yeasts and filamentous fungi. This signalling pathway may have a role in regulating cell-growth, development and pathogenicity. Preliminary evidence indicates that a problem in protein secretion leads to transcriptional down- regulation of the expression of secretory proteins, a signalling mechanism distinct from the unfolded protein response where the problem leads to enhanced synthesis of chaperones and protein-folding catalysts. The existence of the new signalling pathway will be established and its molecular components will be defined in yeasts and filamentous fungi.
