Abstract

The proposal seeks to isolate new inhibitors of the complement pathway. It makes use of the fact that baculoviruses are very sensitive to complement lysis and undergo a 4- or 5- log drop in titre when incubated with a complement active serum. Using our novel technology for the expression of foreign proteins on the surface of the baculovirus particle we propose the construction of baculovirus display libraries using cDNA from ticks known to encode complement inhibitor proteins. Expression of such proteins on the viral surface will allow the direct selection of viruses displaying complement inhibitor proteins when incubated with complement.
