Abstract

Short distance communication between plant cells is a fundamental feature of cell fate determination, but we understand little of the mechanisms involved for many developmental situations. Transgenic techniques to manipulate cellular organisation can potentially facilitate investigation of the relationship between cell morphogenesis and fate control, and of the cell autonomy of gene function. The aim of this project is to investigate mechanisms of intracellular communication during pollen development. This is expected to generate fundamental new information on the relationship between tapetum cell morphogenesis and pollen development, and may lead to new approaches to engineer male sterility in crop plants.
