Abstract

Conformations of calcium-binding and other protein ions in vacuo will be studied by electrospray ionisation coupled with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance. Gradual unfolding of gaseous protein ions will be induced by controlled pulsed-laser irradiation at selected infra-red wavelengths. The progress of unfolding will be monitored through hydrogen/deuterium exchange and proton transfer reactions. An objective will be to elucidate the relationships between gas-phase conformations and those in solution.
