Abstract

Rapid genotypic and phenotypic characterisation of Streptomyces cyaneus and related organisms will be performed using 16S rDNA, 16S - 23S spacer DNA sequencing and pyrolysis mass spectrometry. The sequence data will be used to establish a fine structure taxonomy of this cluster of anthracycline producing strains. The phenotypic structure, determined using pyrolysis mass spectrometry over a range of growth conditions, will be mapped onto the sequence data. The pattern of production of poly-ketide anthracyclines will be determined by this layer chromatography. The complete data set will be used to evaluate the ability to map natural products to the phylogenetic tree.
