Abstract

Glycodelin-A (GdA, also known as placental protein 14 or progesterone-associated endometrial protein) isolated from amniotic fluid, suppresses responses by a variety of different immune effector cell types and also inhibits human sperm-zona pelucida binding under hemizona assay conditions. Glycodelin-S (GdS), found in human seminal plasma, is immunologically indistinguishable from GdA but does not display contraceptive properties. It has been suggested that the origin of their different properties is due to the differences in their glycans. The specificity of the activity may be dependent on non-covalent interactions between the epitopes and one or more receptors, it is the nature of this interaction that we wish to investigate and exploit.
