Abstract

Follicular dendritic cells (FDCs) in the germinal centres of secondary lymphoid tissue are pivotal for the affinity maturation of antibody responses and maintenance of immunological memory. Monoclonal antibodies that delineate FDCs in the dark zone, basal light zone or throughout the germinal centres in ruminants have been identified. Some of the patterns of FDC staining have not been described previously in any species. The project aims to clone cDNAs encoding these molecules in ruminants and mice to determine their role in regulating B cell activation and differentiation. Murine cDNAs will facilitate the longer-term aim of investigating the in vivo functions of these molecules.
