Abstract

The proposed research will develop methods for the formation and characterisation of gold colloidal nanoparticles coated with a photosensitizer self-assembled monolayer (SAM). The proposed methods will enable the synthesis of SAM coated particles in the 1-10 nm size regime. Generation of the cytotoxic species, singlet oxygen, from the surface of the photosensitizer coated nanoparticles will be achieved using laser excitation at 690 nm to elicit a photodynamic response. Assessment will be made as to whether such gold/SAM nanostructures could be a useful vehicle for the delivery of macromolecular photodynamic drugs.
